Today is United Nations Day – a day to celebrate what the UN stands for. Our enduring commitment to peace, development, and human rights. For all the peoples.
There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations.
Last year, we asked YOU - Cambodian leaders, youth, civil society, about the future you want. In 2020, we listened to more than 1.5 million people in 193 countries. From these conversations, the UN Secretary General presented a plan to respond to today’s problems and the challenges of tomorrow: Our Common Agenda.
COVID-19 has taken more than 4 million lives. Poverty, hunger and gender inequality are rising again, after decades of decline. Climate emergency pose extreme risks to human life and to our planet.
But times of crisis can also bring out the best — and show what is possible when we work together.
In Cambodia, the UN responded immediately to support the government in containing pandemic. Our priorities were clear: save lives and stop transmission of COVID; mitigate the impact on the most vulnerable; and recover better with human rights at its core.
Humanity’s very future depends on solidarity, trust, and our ability to work together as a global family to achieve shared goals.
That is why Our Common Agenda is, above all, a plan of action, to accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals and leave no one behind.
Our Common Agenda is a renewal of the social contract, anchored in human rights. A focus on the future and young people. Urgent action to protect the environment.
The United Nations in Cambodia is for YOU. When we work together, there is no limit to what we can achieve.
Happy UN day!
